PHOENIX – A teen suspected of robbery and murder was arrested by Phoenix police officers on Monday.

According to Detective James Holmes, Phoenix police Officer Eric Gomez responded to a burglary in the area of Seventh Street and Dobbins Road at approximately 5 p.m. Monday.

During the investigation, Gomez reviewed a video surveillance tape of the townhome complex and observed a black male in the area of the burglary who appeared to live immediately across from where the burglary occurred.

Gomez spoke with the female resident of the home, who told him “Jock is not home.”

Holmes said Gomez recognized the name Jock as the name of the suspect in the armed robberies of two Subway stores on May 31.

Gomez called for more officers and Jock Coker, 18, was taken into custody without incident.

On the day of the Subway robberies, Holmes said that police officers saw the suspect driving a white 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck. Officers checked the home of the registered owner of the truck and found him dead.

Coker, who had also been recognized by police on the day of the robberies, became a suspect in the death of the victim, Tony R. Ortega, 74.

Coker was booked into jail on multiple counts, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping.
